Synopsis: “Struggling manga author Satoru Fujinuma is beset by his fear to express himself. However, he has a supernatural ability of being able to prevent deaths and casualties by being sent back in time before an incident occurs, repeating time until it is prevented. One day, he is involved with an incident with his mother. Desperate to prevent the incident, he gets sent back in time only to find himself as a grade-schooler. Satoru brings himself to a new journey; using his abilty to prevent the past from changing into a deplorable future.”

“Erased” is essentially a murder mystery with a time-travelling twist. If you enjoy stories where you look for clues to unravel the truth, then this anime would not disappoint. Note that this anime also has mature themes like domestic abuse, crime, and pornography. Watch it here.

Attack on Titan

Synopsis: “Humans are nearly exterminated by giant creatures called Titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of titans. Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a titan in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a colossal titan that appears out of thin air. As the smaller titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single titan and take revenge for all of mankind.”

I can finish the “Attack on Titan” series in one-sitting! The premise is more than enough to pique one’s curiosity, but what would really keep you going are the brilliant fight scenes, fleshed out characters, and remarkable animation. Watch it here.

One Punch Man

Synopsis: “In a world of superhuman beings, Saitama is a unique hero, he can defeat enemies with a single punch. But being just one hero in a world filled with them, his life is empty and hollow: he gets no respect from anyone, he displays a laidback attitude to everything and for the most part, he finds his overall hero life pointless… and worst of all, he lost his hair due to intense training. These are the adventures of an ordinary yet extraordinary hero.”

Just like its main character, “One Punch man’ is unapologetically over the top. There’s no shortage of intense superhero action. But much more than the fighting sequences the real charm of this anime comes from the humor. Just look at Saitama’s deadpan face and you’ll know what I mean. Watch it here.

Assassination Classroom

Synopsis: “The Earth is threatened by a powerful creature who destroyed 70% of the Moon with its power, rendering into the shape of a crescent moon forever. The creature claims that within a year, Earth will also be destroyed by him, but he offers mankind a chance to avert this fate. In class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School, he starts working as a homeroom teacher where he teaches his students not only regular subjects, but the ways of assassination. The Japanese government promises a reward of ¥10 billion (i.e. 100 million USD) to whoever among the students succeeds to kill their teacher, whom they have named “Korosensei” . However, this has proven to be an almost impossible task, as he has several inhuman abilities at his disposal, including the capacity of moving at Mach 20.”

This is another anime where the lead character has unparalleled power. Just like Saitama in “One Punch Man”, Korosensei’s dilemma comes from the fact that no one is strong enough to kill him. But don’t let the dreary premise fool you, this anime is actually full of touching moments about respect, love, and sacrifice. Watch it here.

Re: Zero – Starting Life in Another World

Synopsis: “Shortly after being summoned to a new world, Subaru Natsuki and his new female companion are brutally murdered. But then he awakes to find himself in the same alley, with the same thugs, the same girl, and the day begins to repeat.”

“Re Zero” is one of those anime that gets better every episode. What I remember the most about this anime though, is how awfully frustrating the main character is. But no matter how much I disliked Subaru, I just can’t get enough of this show! The cliffhanger endings keeps me going on and on and on. Watch it here.

Death Note

Synopsis: “After an intelligent yet cynical high school student begins to cleanse the world from evil with the help of a magical notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written on it, international authorities call upon a mysterious detective known as “L” to thwart his efforts.”

“Death Note” is one of the titles on top of my mind whenever I’m asked what my favorite anime are. It’s the ultimate mindfuck. But don’t bother seeing the live-action adaptation because it doesn’t do justice to the anime. Trust me, you won’t be the same after seeing this. Watch it here.

My Hero Academia

Synopsis: “A superhero-loving boy without any powers is determined to enroll in a prestigious hero academy and learn what it really means to be a hero.”

The premise of “My Hero Academia” is not highly original, and there’s actually several anime out there that are set on schools for kids with superpowers. But what makes this anime different, is that it takes its time discussing morality, and how both heroes and villains are simply two sides of the same coin. Watch it here.

Synopsis: “A young man named, Koichi Sakakibara, transfers to a new school where he finds himself drawn into a mystery involving a mysterious girl and a series of gruesome deaths.”

I know a good spooky show when I see one, and “Another” is one of the anime that made the cut. There are gruesome deaths, creepy characters, and a brilliant mix of the psychological and supernatural that will keep you guessing what’s going to happen next. Watch it here.

Stein’s Gate

Synopsis: “Okabe Rintarou, a university student who refers to himself as Crazy Mad Scientist Hououin Kyouma and his lab’s members work on a microwave device that can transfer messages to the past. Without getting captured, they should get it working in order to beat the evil organization, SERN and stop their evil plans.”

A microwave oven that can transcend time might sound silly but trust me, “Stein’s Gate” will leave you scratching your heads and re-watching episodes. Time travel may not be a new premise, but this anime takes the butterfly effect into a whole new level. Watch it here.

Synopsis: “The story takes place in a world of modern, civilized, anthropomorphic animals with a cultural divide between the carnivores and herbivores. The series takes its name from the in-universe rank of Beastar, an individual of great talent, service, and notoriety. Legoshi, a large gray wolf, is a timid and quiet student of Cherryton Academy where he lives in a dorm with several other carnivorous students including his outgoing Labrador friend, Jack. As a member of the school’s drama club, Legoshi works as a stagehand and supports the actors of the club headed by the star pupil Louis, a red deer. Out of nowhere, Tem the alpaca is brutally murdered and devoured in the night setting a wave of unease and distrust between the herbivore and carnivore students. At the same time, Legoshi has a fateful encounter with Haru, a small dwarf rabbit, and begins developing complex feelings for her.”

Think “Zootopia” but with violence, blood, and inter-species sex (???). I never expected to like Beastars but it turned out to be a delightful watch, discussing themes of discrimination, sexuality, drugs, and other socially relevant themes. Don’t be fooled by the cuddly characters, this is anime is as mature as it can get! Watch it here.

FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Synopsis: “Two brothers lose their mother to an incurable disease. With the power of “alchemy”, they use taboo knowledge to resurrect her. The process fails, and as a toll for using this type of alchemy, the older brother, Edward Elric loses his left leg while the younger brother, Alphonse Elric loses his entire body. To save his brother, Edward sacrifices his right arm and is able to affix his brother’s soul to a suit of armor. With the help of a family friend, Edward receives metal limbs – “automail” – to replace his lost ones. With that, Edward vows to search for the Philosopher’s Stone to return the brothers to their original bodies, even if it means becoming a “State Alchemist”, one who uses his/her alchemy for the military.”

Not to be mistaken with the first “Full Metal Alchemist” anime (which is also on Netflix), “Brotherhood” is a reboot that is more faithful to the manga. This anime has it all – incredible storytelling, well-developed characters, kick-ass action, and a bit of comedy too. Watch it here.
