In time for the release of “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” this week, the YouTube-grown video essayist-narration extraordinaire behind the channel The Nerdwriter, Evan Puschak, has published a new video appreciating the sound design of the “Harry Potter” films.
In the video, Puschak points out the lack of precursor for “what magic sounds like”. True enough, it wasn’t until Alfonso Cuarón’s “The Prisoner of Azkaban” that the franchise developed its own profile, which would later become seminal for many movies about spellcasting. This bit is true even for the new “Fantastic Beasts” film, and will likely be true for however many films will be borne out of J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World literary-cum-cinematic universe.
