Docu-thriller about land crusaders ‘Delikado’ racks Emmy nom

The Filipino-Australian production is Emmy-nominated in the Outstanding Investigative Documentary category.

From the team behind Give Up Tomorrow and Call Her Ganda, this thrilling documentary about a network of Palawan natives determined to protect their paradise-like island is already making rounds and has recently snagged an Emmy nomination.

Titled Delikado, the film follows filmmaker and journalist Karl Malakunas as he tails a ragtag group of land defenders trying to protect what is considered to be the Philippines’ “last ecological fronteir” from greedy developers, politicians, and illegal loggers.

Here’s the full synopsis:

Follows a number of Palawan natives who risk their lives in David versus Goliath-style struggles trying to stop politicians and businessmen from destroying their hometown.

Interesting, too, are the parallels the documentary is drawing in its unique expose of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s “war on drugs,” a bloody streak of violence and murders that claimed thousands of innocent Filipinos’ lives.

Delikado is nominated for the Emmy’s Outstanding Investigative Documentary category alongside streaming giants’ docu entries: Netflix’s FIFA Uncovered and I Am Vanessa Guillen, Max’s Escape from Kabul, and Amazon Prime’s Flight/Risk

The News & Documentary Emmy Awards will be held on September 28, 2023, in Times Square, New York. There’s no talks yet about a local screening as of press time.
