Universal Studios has dropped the first trailer for David Gordon-Green’s The Exorcist: Believer, a direct sequel to William Friedkin’s seminal demonic possession thriller, The Exorcist, first released in 1973.

Known for his three-part reboot-cum-revival of John Carpenter’s iconic slasher, Halloween, Gordon-Green seems to have similarly grand plans for the Exorcist franchise; alongside the release of this trailer, the release date for the sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, has also been announced, dated April 18, 2025.

Believer, meanwhile, opens in theaters in a few months, on October 13th. It follows a pair of young girls who, after disappearing for three days, return taunted by a vicious demonic entity. Ellen Burstyn makes a return as Chris MacNeil after her first appearance 50 years ago.
